Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder that can also be referred to as a bladder infection. It is typified by a painful or burning sensation when passing water and a frequent, and sometimes urgent, need to urinate. These symptoms are due to the presence of bacteria in the urine, which make it more acidic than normal. In some cases it may be accompanied by stomach cramps and backache, adding to the general discomfort of the sufferer. Simple treatments rely on potassium or sodium salts making the urine less acidic and render conditions unfavourable for bacteria to thrive. These treatments are available in pleasant tasting formulations that are mixed in water.
