Want stronger nails? Here’s How…

It’s nice to pamper yourself every now and then with a professional manicure (make that a mani-pedi if you’re feeling extra fancy). But you may soon find that these indulgent pamper sessions are actually leaving your claws looking and feeling weak, brittle, and dried-out.

Want to get your nails back in tip-top shape? We’ve got your back! We’ve put together some handy tips to help fast-track you toward stronger, healthier nails. Read on…

Take a Biotin Supplement

Found naturally in animal-based proteins like eggs, salmon, and beef, as well as in legumes, spinach, and sweet potatoes, biotin is the B vitamin you could be missing out on. Known also as B-7, biotin has been found to be effective in strengthening hair and nails. Bonus: it can help your nervous system work at optimal levels! How’s that for efficient?

Lamberts' Maxi-Hair Tablets are packed with biotin, selenium, and a number of other vitamins, so you’ll enjoy other benefits in addition to stronger nails.

Hydrate Your Nails

If your hands are constantly submerged in water – as is the case when you’re taking a bath, washing the dishes, or washing your hands – you’re more likely to experience drying-out of your nails.

Cleaning chemicals, even the mild ones, can further weaken your nails and increase the risk of breakage (so you may have to cut back on your daily 'Hinch-ing'). Furthermore, the ethanol in hand sanitiser can leave your nails looking and feeling parched.

To avoid this, use a nourishing hand cream to rejuvenate your nails. This Aveeno Restore & Protect Hand Cream, designed for chapped hands, does just that. You could also get into the habit of wearing gloves while cleaning or washing up.

Give Your Nails a Break

Can’t go without nail polish? Regularly file your nails? Addicted to talon-like acrylic nails? Your nail pampering could be doing your nails more harm than good.

Constant use of nail polish doesn’t allow your nails breathing room, which could eventually weaken them. Moreover, while filing your nails seems like a great thing, particularly if you keep your nails short (which helps prevent chips and cracks), improper filing can cause brittleness. If you file in a back-and-forth motion, try filing in one direction and going easy on the sides of your nails.

Regularly wearing acrylic nails can also cause your nails to peel, so take a break whenever you get them off.

Switch Shampoos

Believe it or not, your shampoo could be doing wonders for your ‘do but completely harming your nails. Detergent shampoos and shampoos designed for oily hair are the likely culprits, as both may strip natural oils from the scalp. When you lather these types of shampoo up with your hands, your nails could be severely dried out.

The solution? Try a different shampoo (we love this ultra-hydrating Anovia Replenishing Argan & Marula Shampoo). Can’t do without shampoo for oily hair? Remember to moisturise your hands after your shower.
