Your Questions About Childbirth - Answered!

Pregnancy is one of the most incredible, unique experiences your body will ever go through. It’s can also be one of the toughest, and as any mum-to-be will tell you, carrying a child for nine months (or longer!) is no mean feat! Those same mums will also tell you that they wouldn’t change any of it for the world.

What nobody seems to discuss, however, is the nitty gritty of childbirth. What goes on? It’s an open secret - everyone vaguely knows the details, but nobody wants to ask the questions they really want answers to.

This blog post is for you - the soon-to-be new parents, who just want somebody to tell it to them straight...

  1. Does it hurt?

The first question every pregnant person asks. Whether they want to know the answer or not, it’s there, staring them in the face. The answer is, well… yes. But, the experience will be completely monitored by total professionals, who are adept at managing pain with a variety of techniques from medications to breathing and massage.

The main thing to remember is that it’s a few hours of difficulty (some euphemism, eh?) for a lifetime of joy with your new little one.

  1. What will I need?

The NHS website has a great and comprehensive list of all the items you’ll need to organise ready for the big day. From front-buttoning nighties to a car seat for the journey home, it’s got everything, which is great, because in the heat of the moment it’s easy to forget something.

When you’re about to set off for the hospital (if you’re having a hospital or birthing centre birth) you’ll want to have pre-packed a bag full of essentials that’ll make you comfortable, as well as necessities such as breast pads and clean underwear. Include lovely things like moisturising almond oil for your stretch marks, hands and nails, dry shampoo and even a face mask if it’ll make your stay in hospital happier!

We have a full hospital bag section on our site - take a look for more ideas on items that’ll help you pack.

  1. How long will it take?

Unfortunately, that’s one questions we can’t answer. Some births are just a couple of hours long, some can take significantly more time. It depends on a number of individual factors.

What’s important to remember is that your midwife and all the medical professionals around you will be completely at ease with your situation (whatever it is!), and are total experts. You will be in safe hands, ready to bring your baby into the world.

There are probably many more questions about childbirth in your mind that we just couldn’t fit into this blog post. Why not write them down and ask them to your midwife? They know your individual pregnancy better than anyone and will be able to give you calm, expert advice tailored to your needs.

The best advice though? Be kind to yourself. You are doing brilliantly!
